Most bugs do not have specialized organs like ears to communicate with each other. Instead, they use chemicals called pheromones for communication.
Pheromones are odorous chemicals that bugs secrete.
These chemicals bind with pheromone-binding proteins located on the antenna of bugs and activate nerve cells.
So any strong smell will either repel or attract bugs. The delicious solid smell of food will attract bugs, but the pungent smells from essential oils distract them and repel them as a result.
This is the principle on which bug repellent works, i.e., natural or chemical repellent like Lysol, mothball, or pine sol.
Does Pine Sol Attract Bugs?
No! Pine-Sol does not attract bugs but is excellent at repelling them. This is because pine sol emits a strong refreshing odor which is excellent at repelling bugs. Moreover, if sprayed in large quantities, pine sol will kill bugs on contact.

Pine-Sol contains several chemicals, including Benzoic acid and Isopropyl alcohol, which act as an antiseptic that kills germs and cleans surfaces.
Besides chemicals, Pine-Sol contains a volatile natural Pinus Palustris Oil, giving Pine-Sol a refreshing smell. This refreshing smell is what helps keep bugs away.

Do Bugs like the smell of Pine Sol?
As mentioned earlier, Pine-Sol contains a refreshing natural oil that gives it its unique and soothing smell.
Although it seems that the smell of Pine-Sol will attract a lot of bugs towards it, the opposite is true; bugs do not like the smell of Pine-Sol.
Instead, all bugs hate the smell of Pine Sol, which is why it keeps bugs away when you apply Pine-Sol indoors.

Does Pine Sol Keeps Bugs Away?
The type of bugs which will invade your house highly depends on several factors, such as the house’s location, city, humidity level, and season. However, common types of bugs often find their way into our houses.
Like other natural repellents such as Neem, Levander, and Clove Oil, Pine-Sol works by releasing a powerful smell that stays on the applied surface for a long.

How to use Pine-Sol to Repel Bugs?
Pine-Sol is an excellent disinfectant and antiseptic and, at the same time, can be used as a natural bug repellent. Here is how to use Pine-Sol to repel bugs.
Step 1: Mix 2 spoons of Pine-Sol in 1 liter of water
The first step is to dilute Pine-Sol because pure pine Sol might destroy certain surfaces like unpolished wood or limestone structures.
Add two spoons of fresh Pine-Sol to 1 liter of water for dilution and thoroughly mix the solution.
Step 2: Pour the solution into a spray bottle
After thoroughly mixing the solution, pour it into a spray bottle. It will make the application very easy. Also, adjust the bottle nozzle to fine mist to prevent surface stains.

Step 3: Spray the solution across multiple locations
Spray the solution around the house and in places where bugs hide. The pine Sol will keep repelling bugs for up to 8 to 12 hours. Repeat the process if needed some other day.
It is essential to know that Pine-Sol Ingestion can be toxic and cause severe symptoms such as Ataxia (Reference). Therefore, always use it cautiously and keep an eye on pets and children.
How to permanently get rid of bugs WITHOUT Pine-Sol?
Getting rid of bugs requires just three simple steps;
- Use a spray to kill those inside your house
- Block re-entry
- Use IGR to control growth for newly hatched bugs
Let’s discuss all these spets in detail.
Step 1: Use a spray to kill the free-roaming bugs inside your house.
The first step is to use an insecticide to get rid of bugs without pine-sol. Insecticides are better than Pine-Sol as pine-sol only keeps them away.
You can get your hand on many sprays, but these are my favorite ones. Use each of them according to the instructions on the pack.
– Bengal Insect Killer is a practical, easy-to-apply & use spray.
– Ortho Home Defense Bug Killer. You can also apply it along your home perimeter to avoid bugs getting inside your home.
– Hot-shot Fogger for all types of bugs.
Step 2: Close all openings
The next step is closing all openings in your house; else, it will be impossible to stop bugs from re-entering.
Use Loctite Foam Sealent (Amazon Link) to close gaps and openings like a pro.
Step 3: Use an IGR
Using an IGR is the last step to ensure the bug’s nymphs don’t grow into adults. An IGR alters the internal hormones of bugs to molt.
This way, the bugs can not become adults and reproduce. Gentrol Growth Regulator (Amazon Link) is the only and the best IGR device for bugs.
It’s very easy to use. Just purge one of them and place it in a hidden place inside your kitchen, bathroom, living, etc. One per room.
That’s it. Peace.
