Does Pine Sol Attract Roaches? [No, But…]

Cockroaches lack specialized auditory organs to communicate with one another. Instead, these insects rely on pheromones, which are chemical compounds that serve as communication signals.

Pheromones are odoriferous substances that cockroaches release into their environment. These substances interact with pheromone-binding proteins located on the antennae of cockroaches and activate nerve cells responsible for communication.

Given this, strong smells can either attract or repel cockroaches. For instance, the appetizing aroma of food will attract roaches, while potent odors from essential oils will deter and repel them.

It is on this basis that cockroach repellents function, whether they are natural or chemical-based. Examples of chemical-based repellents include Lysol, mothball, and pine sol.

Does Pine Sol Attract Roaches?

No! Pine-Sol does not attract roaches but is excellent at repelling them. This is because pine sol emits a strong refreshing odor which is excellent at repelling roaches. Moreover, if sprayed in large quantities, pine sol will kill roaches on contact.

Pine-Sol is a cleaning product that incorporates a variety of chemicals, such as Benzoic acid and Isopropyl alcohol, to provide an effective antiseptic that eradicates germs and thoroughly cleanses surfaces.

In addition to its chemical composition, Pine-Sol also incorporates volatile natural Pinus Palustris Oil, which imparts a pleasant aroma. The fragrance derived from this oil is renowned for its ability to repel roaches and keep them at bay.

What is Pine Sol [History]

Pine Sol, a popular cleaning product, was developed by Harry A. Cole in 1929 in Mississippi. Cole’s close proximity to a pine forest enabled him to observe that pine oil possessed insect-repellent properties, making it an effective solution for small insect infestations such as bugs, mosquitoes, and beetles.

Upon further experimentation, Cole found that when he combined pine oil with alkyl alcohol, it acted as a powerful disinfectant and cleaner. During the Great Depression, this proved to be a cost-effective alternative to other more expensive disinfectants. Cole refined his recipe and began mass-producing Pine Sol with the assistance of entrepreneur Robert Earnest and Howard S. Cohoon in 1948.

Cohoon modernized the operation by introducing full automation, thereby improving the efficiency of the manufacturing process. Pine Sol was later acquired by Clorox from American Cyanamid’s Shulton Group in 1990.

To produce Pine Sol, pine oil is extracted from plants of the genus pinus and emulsifiers such as sodium petroleum sulfonate and surfactants like alkyl alcohol ethoxylated are added.

Isopropyl alcohol is also incorporated into the mixture as a disinfectant. While the precise percentages of each ingredient are undisclosed, it is estimated that Pine Sol contains roughly 8 to 10 % pine oil and 3 to 7 % alcohol.

Do Roaches like the smell of Pine Sol?

As mentioned earlier, Pine-Sol contains a refreshing natural oil that gives it its unique and soothing smell.

Although it seems that the smell of Pine-Sol will attract a lot of roaches towards it, the opposite is true; roaches do not like the smell of Pine-Sol.

Instead, all roaches hate the smell of Pine Sol, which is why when you apply Pine-Sol indoors, it keeps roaches away.

Do You know Pine Sol helps stop your pets from peeing inside the house?

Pets, including dogs and cats, have an innate behavioral response to pee in areas that smell like ammonia. This helps them locate the peeing territory they previously peed in because urine contains ammonia.

Interestingly, unlike other cleaners that contain ammonia Pine Sol does not contain ammonia. So once you clean the surface with Pine-Sol, it automatically signals the pets not to pee on that surface. This can help stop your pets from peeing inside the house.

Does Pine Sol Keeps Roaches Away?

The species of cockroaches that may infest a residential property are influenced by various factors such as geographical location, climate, and environmental conditions. Common cockroach species that are known to infiltrate homes include wood cockroaches, German cockroaches, American cockroaches, and oriental cockroaches.

Natural repellents, including Pine-Sol, leverage the power of potent scents to discourage pests from occupying a particular area. Pine-Sol, along with other natural repellents like Neem, Lavender, and Clove oil, works by emitting a persistent aroma that lingers on the treated surface for an extended period, creating a hostile environment that cockroaches are unlikely to tolerate.

However, Pine Sol may attract roaches when

  • It goes bad; expired Pine Sol cannot keep repelling roaches, and the sweetness might attract roaches.
  •  Mixing the pine sol with other cleaners will eliminate the Pine Sol’s ability, which might attract roaches.
  •  Applying the pine sol in a messy kitchen with leftover food or spilled juices alters the smell of pine sol and attracts more roaches.

How to use Pine-Sol to Repel roaches?

Pine-Sol is a highly effective disinfectant and antiseptic that is widely recognized for its ability to eliminate germs and bacteria.

Furthermore, it has been observed to function as a natural repellent against cockroaches, making it an ideal solution for households looking to keep their premises clean and pest-free.

In this regard, Pine-Sol can be employed to discourage the presence of roaches in your home, providing an additional layer of protection against these harmful pests.

Step 1: Mix 2 spoons of Pine-Sol in 1 liter of water

It is important to exercise caution when using Pine-Sol for cleaning purposes as its undiluted form can cause damage to some surfaces such as unpolished wood or limestone structures.

Therefore, the initial step in utilizing this product is to dilute it appropriately.

To achieve optimal dilution, a recommended amount of two spoons of Fresh Pine-Sol should be added to one liter of water. It is essential to thoroughly mix the solution to ensure an even distribution of the cleaning agent.

By following these guidelines, one can effectively utilize Pine-Sol for cleaning tasks without causing any inadvertent harm to the intended surface.

Step 2: Pour the solution into a spray bottle

It is important to ensure that the solution has been thoroughly mixed before transferring it to a spray bottle. Once transferred, the solution can be applied with ease using the spray bottle.

To prevent unwanted surface stains, it is advisable to adjust the nozzle to produce a fine mist. This will enable the solution to be dispersed evenly over the target area without causing any unsightly marks or blemishes.

Step 3: Spray the solution across multiple locations

To effectively repel roaches, we recommend applying the solution in areas where they are known to hide and frequent within your household.

Spraying Pine Sol in such locations can effectively deter roaches for a duration of up to 8 to 12 hours. If necessary, we suggest repeating this process on a later date to maintain the effectiveness of the solution.

It is essential to know that Pine-Sol Ingestion can be toxic and cause severe symptoms such as Ataxia (Reference). Therefore, always use it cautiously and keep an eye on pets and children.

How to permanently get rid of cockroaches WITHOUT Pine-Sol?

Getting rid of cockroaches requires just three simple steps;

  1. Use bait to kill them
  2. Block re-entry
  3. Use IGR to control growth for newly hatched roaches

Let’s discuss all these spets in detail.

Step 1: Use a bait

The first step is to use bait to get rid of roaches without pine-sol. Baits are better than Pine-Sol as pine-sol only keeps them away.

You can get your hand on many baits, but these are my favorite ones. Use each of them according to the instructions on the pack.

– Bengal Roach Killer is a dry spray bait, very easy to apply and use. (How to use guide)
– Advion Cockroach Gel Bait is the most effective gel you can buy.
– Hot Shot Liquid Cockroach Trapper and Killer is the best trap you can get for cockroaches.
– Combat Max 12-Month Roach Killing Bait is the best bait out on the market.

Step 2: Close all openings

The next step is closing all openings in your house; else, it will be impossible to stop an infestation. Learn More: How to get rid of Roaches coming from Neighbors

Use Loctite Foam Sealent (Amazon Link) to close gaps and openings like a pro.

Step 3: Use an IGR

Using an IGR is the last step to ensure the roach nymphs don’t grow into adults. An IGR alters the internal hormones of roaches to molt.

This way, the roaches can not become adults and reproduce. Gentrol Growth Regulator (Amazon Link) is the only and the best IGR device for roaches.

It’s very easy to use. Just purge one of them and place it in a hidden place inside your kitchen, bathroom, living, etc. One per room.

That’s it. Peace.
